Firemen at scene of this afternoon's blast

Two explosions are reported to have occurred at about 13:15 at the Assanands building next to Mount Kenya University Towers, just behind the Nation centre. Initial reports suggest one person has died and 23 people have been admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital. The Kenya Red Cross and Government Service Units are on the scene. The area is being cordoned off and Moi Avenue, Tabman Road and Riverside Road have been closed.

It is not known at this stage what caused the explosions but a police spokesman has been quoted as saying that a bomb is suspected given the extent of the damage.
