Kenya gained its first two Olympic medals last night in London in the women’s 10000M race with Sally Kipyego winning the silver medal and Vivian Cheruiyot bronze, both athletes made personal best times.

Defending champion, Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba, won gold thus retaining her title.
The race started off with the Japanese women taking up the pace, but by the 4000m mark with an average pace of 74s per lap Kipyego took up the pace. Around 7500m Ethiopian Kidane ratchetted the pace and the four runners, two Ethiopians and two Kenyans broke free of the pack.

With three laps to go Kipyego found the front as Kidane slipped back, but when the bell sounded for the final lap Dibaba accelerated into the back straight relentlessly powering onwards, putting over 50m between her and Kipyego by the time she crossed the line.

Kenya 2nd and 3rd, Ethiopia 1st and 4th.
The third Kenyan in the team, Joyce Chepkurui retired in the 17th lap.

Dibaba’s time was 30 minutes 20.75 seconds

President Kenyatta declared winner.
