DEATH TOLL INCLUDES 31 WOMEN AND 11 CHILDREN…

Kenyan media are reporting that ‘at least 62’ people were massacred on Tuesday in the Tana River and Mandera county areas of Kenya in a raid believed to have been made by the Pokomo community on the neighbouring Orma’s.

The raiders are reported to have been armed with ‘pangas, bows, arrows and guns’.

Among the dead are at least 31 women and 11 children. Three girls of ‘marriage age’ are reported to have been abducted as ‘war booty’.

The raiders also killed over 300 cattle and destroyed up to 100 homes leaving at least 1,000 people homeless.

The attack is believed to have been in revenge for a raid by Orma herdsmen over a week ago on a village called Kau, in Kilelengwani, in which three Pokomo villagers were killed, cattle slaughtered and houses burnt.

The area has a history of inter-ethnic violence arising from ‘pastoralist and farming rivalry’. In 2002 at 100 people were killed in similar circumstances.
