39 killed in latest intertribal clashes in Tana River Delta

At least 39 people have been killed in renewed clashes in the Tana River inter-community violence. This follows a dawn raid in the area on Friday that also left 20 others injured. The victims include 13 children, six women, 11 men and nine attackers, according to reports citing police and emergency service sources.

Previous escalations in tension in the area have resulted in deaths and the imposition of a curfew.

There are fears the death toll could rise as several people have been severely injured. Police in the area say 30 others were wounded, with 45 houses torched in the attacks that occurred at about 4 am in  Kipau village, within the Tarassa Division.
