BREAKING NEWS: NEW TERRORIST ATTACK NEAR MPEKETONI – 10 REPORTED KILLED

Fresh attacks at Poromoko

The BBC, AFP and Reuters news agencies have posted initial reports of another terrorist near Mpeketoni where 56 people were killed by Al-Shebaab terrorists on Sunday evening.

At least 10 people have been killed in a new overnight attack in a village near Mpeketoni, with Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab rebels claiming responsibility.

Kenyan police said that the gunmen raided the village of Poromoko, near Mpeketoni.

It is believed that the attacking terrorists are part of the same group that carried out the massacre close in Mpeketoni on Sunday, attacked a village in the same region overnight on Monday and left 10 dead.

AL-SHABAAB: “COMMANDOS HAVE FULFILLED THEIR DUTIES”

“We carried out another attack last night. We killed 20 people, mainly police and Kenyan wildlife wardens. The commandos have been going to several places looking for military personnel,” Shebab’s military spokesman, Abdulaziz Abu Musab, is quoted as having told AFP by telephone.

“The commandos have fulfilled their duties and returned peacefully to their base,” he added.

According to AFP a Kenyan police spokeswoman Zipporah Mboroki confirmed an attack had taken place overnight in which at least 10 people died.

“Our officers are trying to access the scene and the details are sketchy,” she said.

NEW TACTIC BY AL-SHABAAB?

The Reuters news agency reports Al-Shabab spokesman Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab saying: “We raided villages around Mpeketoni again last night,”

Later he was quoted by the AFP as saying that the militants “have been going to several places looking for military personnel” and that most of those killed were police officers and wildlife wardens.

In Sunday’s attack, al-Shabab are reported to have targeted men, in many cases leaving their wives and children unharmed.

Dennis Okari, the BBC’s correspondent in Nairobi says this is a new tactic for the group.

Mpeketoni, near Lamu Island, is not a tourist resort. It appears the attackers were not interested in foreigners or their interests, according to the BBC’s correspondent.
