THE BLACK STARS FADE AWAY AS THE DESERT FOXES KEEP AFRICAN DREAMS ALIVE

GHANA 1-2 PORTUGAL

IMG-20140627-WA0000Ghana was beaten by Portugal by two goals to one making both teams to bow out of the competition emotionally.

The Black Stars started very well and kept attacking their opponents but lady luck smiled on the Portuguese at the 31st minute when John Boye put the ball in his own net giving Portugal a lead.

Asamaoh Gyan equalized at the 5th minute but Christiano Ronaldo would cap the game at the 81st minute with his left foot following an error by the Ghana’s goalkeeper’s, who punched the ball in front of the striker. Portugal finished 3rd with the same points as second place USA, but the Americans qualified since they had a superior goal difference.

Ronaldo’s goal was his first and last in this season’s World Cup and he barely celebrated the goal. It has been bitter-sweet for him since he has been nursing a leg injury.

The Americans qualified for the last 16 knockout stages despite Germany beating them by a solo goal. Thomas Muller’s second half goal in the 55th minute ensured that Germany finished the group as leaders.

As expected, the Germans dominated the game, while USA had their back against the wall offering very few threats at the opposition. The USA Coach, Klinsmann congratulated his team for a good performance in a tough group that was nicknamed ‘Group of Death’.

“Everyone said we had no chance but we moved on and now we really want to prove a point,” he said.

ORIGI, THE BELGIAN GAME CHANGER

BELGIUM 1-0 KOREA

The Taeguk Warriors were unable to beat a 10man Belgium. Steven Defour was red carded for stamping on Kim Shinwook but South Korea failed to take advantage. The Skipper of the day, Jan Vertonghen scored the only goal at the 78th minute, kicking the Koreans out of the World Cup.

The win gave Belgium a perfect record of 3 wins out of 3 games and stood top in their group.

Once again, the now Belgium sensational Divock Origi came in as a sub in the 60th minute to change the whole game as he did in the past two games. The winning goal from Vertonghen, who was standing in for the injured Vincent Kompany, came after the Korean goalkeeper saved a shot from the 19yr old Origi.

ALGERIA 1-1 RUSSIA

The Desert Foxes qualified to the 2nd round for the first time in the history of World Cup, after Islam Slimani’s header secured the point they needed to finish second in the group and above Coach Fabio Capello’s Russian team.

There was a bit of a scare when Aleksandr Kokorin gave Russia an early lead with a bullet header at the 6th minute however in the second half, Algeria equalized in the 60th minute when the Russian keeper failed to deal with a free kick and Slimani headed it in from close range.

KNOCKOUT STAGES
