AFRICAN REPRESENTATIVES BOW OUT WITH PRIDE

FRANCE 2-0 NIGERIA

during the 2014 FIFA World Cup on June 30, 2014.

The reigning African champions were knocked out of the World Cup last night but not before giving the 1998 World Champions a run for their money.

The Super Eagles dominated the game and in the early minutes of the match, Emmanuel Emenike had his goal controversially ruled out for offside by the assistant referee. The Nigerians kept the ball well and were always attacking the Les Blues, who looked rattled only depending on counter attacks to move forward.

Enyeama was superb at the Nigerian goal making multiple saves, but 11 minutes to the end of the match he made an error, punching the ball to find Paul Pogba and the Juventus midfielder who was unmarked headed it home to give France a lead.

Joseph Yobo own goal on injury time, cemented the victory for the French team taking them to the quarter-finals.

GERMANY 2-1 ALGERIA

imageThe three time World champions survived a scare of being eliminated by the underdogs Algeria, in a game that the neutrals believe the North Africans deserved to go through. No team was able to break the deadlock after 90minutes of regular play that was entertaining to watch. It had to take a substitute player, Schurrle to find the back of the net only 2 minutes into the first half of extra time.

Mesut Ozil, the Arsenal attacking midfielder scored the winning goal at the 119th minute. Djabou scored for Algeria a minute later as a consolation goal. The Desert Foxes were excellent both in defending and attacking and definitely made Africa proud regardless.

GERMANS PERFORMANCE CRITICIZED

The German national team has been heavily criticized by a section of their fans and the media. For a team that is ranked second in the world, they lacked fluency of the giants they are. However, German’s defender Per Matersacker was quick to defend his team’s performance asking what’s the need to play beautiful football and lose?

“I don’t know what you want from us, do you think that just Mickey Mouse teams are involved in the last 16?” he posed, adding that all that  matters is they are in the quarterfinals.
