Meshak Yebei – Dead or alive?

MESHACK YEBEI MYSTERY DEEPENS

The mystery surrounding the “death” and now disappearance of alleged ICC witness Meshack Yebei, had intensified after police last week claimed that fingerprint tests indicated that the body found in a river that was believed to be Yebei’s belonged to another man.

In a sudden twist of events another family stepped forward and claimed that the body was that of their kin Yusuf Hassan, who was a matatu tout in Kapsabet, adding more mystery to the Yebei saga.

Tests carried out at Eldoret’s Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital’s mortuary identified that the body was that of Yusuf, whose relatives also say they positively identified him. However, the family of Yebei are still insisting that the body is that of their kin.

BODY FOUND IN YALA RIVER

Mr Yebei disappeared in December and on the 28th of the same month. A body which his family later claimed to be his was found floating in River Yala in Nandi County, about 100 kilometres from his home.

DNA RESULTS DUE TODAY

Police have said they will be conducting DNA tests for both families to ascertain the identity of the body at the mortuary “beyond reasonable doubt” and the results are expected to be out today.

RUTO’S LAWYER

Meanwhile human rights activist Ken Wafula has asked police investigators to invite Deputy President William Ruto’s lawyer Karim Khan to record a statement over the assertions he made when the body, which had been earlier thought to be Yebei’s, was discovered.

Khan had through a letter, requested for an investigation into the death of his witness and asked the government to uncover the circumstances under which the ‘defence witness’ died. According to Wafula, Khan should tell the police what made him to request for investigations over the body.

“The investigators also need to invite Khan to Kenya so that he can record a statement,” he said.

Well, if the body in contention is not that of Yebei, then just where is he? And why was Yusuf, if the body is his, killed?

President Kenyatta declared winner.
