Julius Yego, popularly known as the “Youtube athlete” continues to make Kenya proud with his impressive javelin skills that have seen him break the national javelin record twice within a span of two weeks.

The Commonwealth and African Javelin champion broke the African and Diamond League record with a 91.39m throw in Birmingham, England on Sunday.

The mighty throw, which was also the best in the world since 2006, had first been ruled out for being outside the sector but the officials reversed their decision 20 minutes later and awarded Yego the victory ahead of  World champion Vitezslav Vesely’s sixth round effort of 88.18 metre.

“When it was accepted, I was very happy for him,” said said David Leting, Athletics head coach.

“Yego will go far. His work is motivating many people. Now some children want to become javelin throwers. I feel a gold medal in Beijing is now a possibility.” He further added.

“Tuko na Julius, anything by a Kenyan is possible so long as you remain focused and determined to go the extra mile,” said Coach Steven Mwaniki.

The previous African record was 89.21m set by Egyptian Ihab Abdelrahman el-Sayed at the Shanghai Golden Grandprix on May 18 while the Diamond Record was 89.88m set by Norwegian Andreas Thorkildsem in 2010 in Denmark.

The new record became the third national that Yego was breaking at the IAAF events.  Last Thursday, he set another Kenyan record of 87.71m in the fourth round at the Rome Golden Gala IAAF Diamond League meeting to finish second, just 10 days after winning the Ostrava IAAF Challenge event in another national record throw of 86.88m.

Yego became a trending topic in twitter after Kenyans took to the social media platform to offer congratulatory messages.
