Uhuru launches new counter terrorism strategy

President Uhuru Kenyatta has today launched the National Strategy to Counter Violent Extremism (NCVE) at state house Nairobi.

According to President Kenyatta, the National NCVE strategy will coordinate the existing efforts to double the country’s capacity to prevent and counter terrorism activities.

“This NCVE strategy will rally all parts of government, communities, civil society, the private sector as well as our international partners. One of the crucial tasks being built on this strategy is the disengagement and rehabilitation of returning foreign terrorist fighters who completely disavow the use of violence and any adherence to the ideology and aims of terrorist groups,” said Uhuru.

Kenya has experienced a series of terror attack from the Al Shabaab militia and especially following the invasion of KDF in Somalia in Operation Linda Nchi.

Uhuru expressed confidence that the new initiative will go a long way in enhancing security in the country.

“I am confident that this strategy we have launched today is a critical step in protecting and advancing the liberty and prosperity of all our people in Kenya, our region and indeed our international community,” he emphasized.

The launch of the NCVE comes in the wake of a recent travel alert issued by the US in June this year.

“U.S. citizens should also be aware of potential terrorist threats and the high risk of crime throughout the country. This replaces the Travel Warning dated November 10, 2015,”
