The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has sought to verify from Tom Mboya Primary School that indeed Mombasa governor Hassan Joho enrolled at the institution, completed his studies and the exact grades he scored.

In a letter written to the school’s head teacher Suleiman Babu, EACC is also demanding copies of the governor’s enrollment particulars and also the school completion certificate.

“The commission is informed that Ali Hassan Joho was a pupil at Tom Mboya Primary School and sat for [the] primary school examination sometimes on or about the year 1989.

“The Commission is informed that Ali Hassan Joho was a pupil at Tom Mboya Primary School and sat for primary school examination sometimes on or about the year 1989. To facilitate our investigations, kindly furnish us with certified copies of the following information and documents: the enrollment particulars of the student, whether the pupil sat KCPE in the said school and the grades obtained, school completion certificate,” says the letter dated March 28, 2017.

Joho has been on the spot over his academic background especially after KNEC announced that his KCSE certificate was forged.

The academic issue is a solid ground to bar the governor from running in the August elections if at all the allegations are proved beyond reasonable doubt as the constitution stipulates that candidates running for president, deputy president, and governor should be holders of a degree.

Joho has been on record defending his grades, saying that he is a proud D Minus student.

“I take pride, really, as a Kenyan to be what I am today. I want to inspire other Kenyans that I can’t have gone through all I went through to put myself through school, get a D minus then give up and it becomes the end of the road for me. I’ve come from far yes, and I have faith I’ll go far. That is why you hear me all the time saying I have ambitions of being the President of this republic because my God has made it possible for me to be what I am today.”Joho said while addressing a press conference.

The principal of Serani secondary school, where the governor attended high school, came to Joho’s defense and confirmed that the governor indeed attended the school and sat for his national exams in 1993.

“Joho was a bonafide student in our institution between February 1990 to November 1993. He enrolled in our institution in 22/02/1990 under admission number 326,” Abbas Juma Ulaya said.
