Paul Lonyangata and his wife purity Rionoripo win 41st Paris marathon

Paul Lonyangata and his wife Purity Rionoripo made a historic win on Sunday in the 41st Paris marathon after they both won their respective races.

The 23-year-old Rionaripo set a new record time in the women’s race of 2hr 20min 50sec, smashing her personal best by almost four minutes while Lonyangata recorded his biggest career win in a time of 2hr 6 min and 10 secs in the men’s race.

Stephen Chebogut, came in second at 2hr 6min 56sec, with Solomon Yego completing the all-Kenyan podium in third at 2hr 7min 13sec.

“I’m so happy, it’s a great day for me to win and to beat my personal best,” said Rionoripo

“It’s great for my wife, I’m very proud of her,” Lonyangata said.

The couples will get a total $126,000 (Sh 12.6 million) in prize money with each pocketing Sh 6.3 million. Rionaripo will also get an undisclosed bonus owing to her course record.

Last year during the Chicago marathon, the couple had both finished in positions four, earning them the nickname “Number 4” from their fellow athletes.
