IEBC LAUNCHES ELECTIONS SECURITY PROJECT TO SECURE AUGUST POLLS

IEBC launches the Elections Security Arrangement project

The Independent and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) together with other government agencies on Tuesday launched the Elections Security Arrangement project (ESAP)

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukai, said that the commission is committed to ensure that it delivers free and fair elections.

“We are fully committed to ensure we deliver a free, fair and a transparent election,” Chebukati said.

According to the electoral body, the project is intended to coordinate how the organizations will receive reports, arrest, investigate and subsequently prosecute any persons responsible for threats of and electoral violence and will see 180,000 security and electoral officers trained ahead of the August polls.

The Inspector General of Police Mr. Joseph Boinnet has reaffirmed the commitment of the National Police Service (NPS) to provide a safe, secure and peaceful environment for the 2017 General Elections.

“NPS has put in place security measures to manage the exercise adding that a special security team will be deployed to ensure that the electioneering period remains peaceful,” the IG said.

The Project brought together a number of institutions; Chief Justice, Director Public Prosecution, Attorney General, National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), Registrar of Political Parties, Peace Building and Disaster Response, Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the UNPD country representative among others.

IEBC has also announced that the official campaign period will kick off on 28th May to 5th August, ahead of the 2017 general elections.
