RAILA ODINGA’S STATEMENT POSTPONED

Musalia Mudavadi – tight lipped

NASA leader Raila Odinga’s much heralded public statement due today, in which he was to tell his supporters the next stage of his plans to challenge the result of Kenya’s recent presidential election in which Mr Odinga officially was defeated by Uhuru Kenyatta by a margin of over 1.4 million votes, has been postponed until tomorrow (Wednesday, 16 August).

The reason given for the delay by Odinga’s ‘Chief Agent’, Musalia Mudavadi, was that the negotiations behind the announcement had taken longer than expected.

“Owing to the urgency, complexity and delicate nature of issues Nasa summit is handling” Mudavadi said, “our consultations are on-going and progressing well”.

“We regret that the consultations are taking longer than anticipated and Nasa will therefore not address Kenyans as projected today. Nasa will issue a comprehensive statement to the nation tomorrow”, Mudavadi said.

There was speculation that the Nasa leader was to announce a campaign of mass protests and an independent audit of the presidential election results.

International observers have declared the election process “free and fair” but Odinga insists it was a “massive fraud”. However, his call for a nationwide boycott of work to take place yesterday went largely unheeded.
