BREAKING NEWS – THREE IEBC COMMISSIONERS RESIGN

IEBC Vice Chair Connie Nkatha Maina – resigned

Kenya’s Independent Elections and Boundary Commission (IEBC) faced more convulsions this morning with the resignations of three of its Commissioners.

Vice Chair Connie Nkatha Maina, together with fellow commissioners Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat, stood down from the electoral organising body citing the inability of the Commission’s chairman Wafula Chebukati to lead IEBC effectively.

STATEMENT: IEBC A “LAUGHING STOCK”

In a joint statement by the three commissioners they accused Chebukati or turning the IEBC into a “laughing stock”:

“For far too long and way too many times, the commission chair has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in difficult times and gives direction when needed”, the statement read.

“Instead under Chebukati’s leadership, the commission boardroom has become a venue for peddling misinformation, grounds for brewing mistrust and a space for scrambling and chasing individual glory and credit”, the three commissioners stated.

Maina, Mwachanya and Kurgat took up their posts as commissioners in January 2017. Following their resignations the IEBC is left with only three commissioners, the chairman Wafula Chebukati, Prof. Abdi Yakub Guliye and the commissions suspended CEO Ezra Chiloba. Another commissioner, Roselyn Akombe resigned just prior to the repeat elections in October 2017.
