TRENDING IN KENYA: FROM AVICII TO MALEMA

Here is news as, in effect, chosen by the people. These are the Top 10 subjects that have been trending over that last week or so via Google Kenyan:

  1. The death of Swedish disc jockey and electronic dance music maestro Avicii (real name Tim Bergling), responsible

    ‘Avicci’ died on April 15

for tracks like Hey Brother and Wake Me Up, propelled the performer to No. 1 in the Kenya search rankings.

  2. The announcement that Arsenal’s long-serving manager Arsene Wenger is to leave the club at the end of the season after 22 years in command got Gunners’ fans hitting the search button.
  3. The death of veteran multi-party campaigner Kenneth Matiba at the age of 85 was a shock to many but perhaps not a surprise as he had been ill for a long time.
  4. Tanzanian singer Ali Kiba, aka Alikbia, got married to Amina Khalif (from Mombasa) which may have broken a few hearts but it was good for the Google ratings.
  5. You may have missed ‘Earth Day‘ in Kenya’s newspapers (because they didn’t report it) but many people searched the annual environment protection day online.
  6. Back to Tanzanian musicians: the arrest of ‘Diamond Platnumz’ over an allegedly inappropriate video made with his squeeze Hamissa Mobetto, titillated many it seems.
  7. It was certainly a shock to hear the news Baringo South MP Grace Kipchoim aged only 49 years old after a long battle with cancer.
  8. What else is social media for? Well venting your anger comes to mind and many did when KPLC‘s electronic payment system collapsed making it near impossible for a while to top up at home leaving many in the dark in more ways than one.
  9. The resignation of yet more IEBC commissioners might, after all that organisations tribulations, not a have provoked a stir among Kenyan readers you would have thought but it did, in at number 9 on the trending list.
  10. And is this one a surprise in the Top 10? Radical South African firebrand Julius Malema’s speech at Winnie Mandela’s funeral caught the imagination of many, perhaps because he slammed the politicians for betrayal and hypocrisy.
