Dr. Justman during the launch of KENPHIA

The Ministry of Health has on Tuesday launched a new HIV survey dubbed Kenya Population based HIV Impact Assessment (KENPHIA), which aims to generate insights on access to quality HIV care by Kenyans.

According to MOH, KENPHIA survey builds on the last Kenya Aids Indicator Survey and is aimed at assessing the current HIV situation to enable better planning for services.

The government is working towards 90:90:90 target which aims to have: 90% of all people living with HIV aware of their status; 90% of all people with diagnosed HIV on treatment; and 90% of people on treatment attaining viral suppression by 2020.

The KENPHIA survey will target 20,000 selected households.

According to health CS Sicily Kariuki, although investments in HIV elimination have resulted in significant achievements key among them being the placement on anti-retroviral therapy of over 1.1 million people living with HIV and AIDS, “there is need to scientifically measure successes in order to identify gaps so that the government can tailor responses towards HIV and AIDS.

The KENPHIA survey will include Hepatitis B and Syphillis.  Infants and pregnant women will also be part of it for nutritional status test.
