SOLAI DAM OWNERS GRANTED BAIL

Solai dam owners charged with manslaughter

Businessman Perry Mansukh Kansangara and Jaya Vinod Kumar of the killer Solai dam in Nakuru and four others have been released on a SH 5M surety bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh2.5 million.

The suspects spend the weekend in custody at Naivasha Maximum Prison after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ordered their arrest. Noordin Haji directed that Perry Mansukh Kansagara Patel be arrested to face charges of manslaughter.

The DPP also directed that some officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the Water Resources Authority (WRA)  and the county government who were mandated with ensuring the safety of dams be charged for failure to prepare an environmental impact assessment report of the dam.

According to the DPP, detectives in their probe discovered that the dam’s construction was done by unqualified staff using the farm equipment leading to construction and design flaws.

The Solai dam burst its banks last month killing 47 people.

SOLAI DAM VICTIMS DUPED?

Some victims of the Solai dam tragedy have come out to say that they were duped to accept sh 100, 000 in compensation only to realize days later that the documents barred them from raising any further claims from the owners of the dam.

As the Standard Newspaper reported, victims alleged that they were not given time to study the document or even get an interpretation of what the clauses meant.

“Survivors said they were desperate for cash. They were required to sign the documents to receive the money. They said they were surprised to later learn that the documents they had signed were discharge and indemnity forms intended to cushion the dam owner, Mansukh Patel.” The article by The Standard reads in part.
