GOVERNORS SAY ARRESTS OVER GRAFT CRIPPLING COUNTY OPERATIONS

Council of Governors

Governors have criticized the war on graft saying it’s not sincere and are asking for immunity from prosecution while they are still in office.

The governors, who were reacting to the arrest of their Busia counterpart Sospeter Ojaamong over the Sh20m fraud allegations, said devolution is under threat.

“The Council takes offense in the way Ojaamong has been treated. His arrest has paralyzed operations of the county and the county has shut down completely,” said Josephat Nanok, Chairman Council of Governors (COG).

“We are aware that there are similar counties that will experience the same. This is the end of devolution, slowly devolution is being eroded,” he added.

Ojaamong and three of his cabinet members were arrested and charged on Wednesday last week and later released on Sh1 million cash bail each.

“As it stands, the case of Busia County is indicative that devolution is under threat. Currently, there is no business being transacted in the County Government of Busia since its chief executive has been arrested and charged in court,” COG said.

COG further asked the institutions that are established by the Constitution and other statutes to deal with mismanagement of public funds undertake their mandate with integrity saying the war on corruption must not be stained with political interests.
