CHUBUKATI SAYS FORMER COMMISSIONERS NOLONGER WELCOME IN IEBC

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati

The Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)  chairman Wafula Chebukati has said that there is no room for commissioners who had resigned from the commision.

Chebukati, who was responding to the dramatic events that saw two IEBC commissioners, who had resigned three months ago, resurface to resume work.

“The procedure of resigning is very clear. They have returned all the assets of the commission and as far as the commission is concerned, they are no longer commissioners of IEBC. Immediately they resigned I wrote to the Treasury to the PS to stop their salaries. I am not sure whether that was done. I have not got feedback up to no,” Chebukati Said.

Vice Chair Connie Nkatha Maina, together with fellow commissioners Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat, stood down from the electoral organizing body citing the inability of the Commission’s chairman Wafula Chebukati to lead IEBC effectively in April.

“For far too long and way too many times, the commission chair has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in difficult times and gives direction when needed”, the commissioners said when announcing their resignation read.

However, Connie Nkatha and Mwachanya showed up at IEBC offices on Friday saying they are back to work.

Chebukati has maintained that their fate was sealed the moment they rendered their resignations and that their replacement is underway.

“The replacement of the commissioners is on course and I hope it will be done. In the meantime, the activities of the commission are going on. The commission is in full swing,” he said.
