US IMPOSES VISA RESTRICTIONS ON GHANA

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

The United States has imposed visa restrictions on Ghana, saying the country is not cooperating in accepting its citizens who have been deported from the US.

According to a statement by the Department of Homeland Security statement Ghana “has denied or unreasonably delayed accepting their nationals ordered removed from the United States.”

Consular officials have been ordered to impose visa restrictions on some categories of visa applicants warning that without an appropriate response from Ghana, the scope of these sanctions may be expanded to a wider population.

“Beginning on February 4, 2019, the U.S. Embassy in Ghana will discontinue issuing all non-immigrant visas (NIV) to domestic employees (A3 and G5) of Ghanaian diplomats posted in the United States,”.

“We hope the Ghanaian government will work with us to reconcile these deficiencies quickly,” said DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said.

The US has been deporting African immigrants since president Trump came in power.
