JKUAT STUDENTS PROTEST RISING INSECURITY AFTER COMRADES MURDER

Tabitha, the first-year JKUAT student stabbed to death

Students of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have today taken to the streets in protest of rising insecurity in Juja, after a comrade was stabbed to death by robbers.

The victim, identified as Tabitha, a first year was reportedly attacked on Thursday night around 8pm, while in the company of a friend outside the campus near Segal hotel.

The students who took to the streets in protest, paralyzing business in Juja Town and transport along the Thika Super Highway, have also condemned the police for using excessive force and live bullets on them while trying to stop them from picketing.

The demonstration was organised by the student’s union.

“This is to inform all students that we will be having a peaceful demonstration in Juja Environs. Following a series of killings, most recent having been on 7th Feb 2019 at Segal Hotel,” read notice from the Union.

The JKUAT students have also taken the protest on social media under the hashtags #stopkillingJkuatStudents, which they are also using to call for more police protection in the area.

Ian Duncan‏ : As a digital journalist, I have covered over 4 deaths at JKUAT from October to date alone. Those stories keep me up every day. Because I am also a student and I keep wondering if I’ll be next. So today I won’t just write; I’ll take to the streets too.

Victor langat‏#JusticeForTabithaMuthoni #stopkillingJkuatStudents #ArrestThugsNow, How many murders do government expect for them to provide enough security in universities and it’s environs?
Wambui_Mburu‏: We cannot be silenced or bullied. Our lives matter!! #stopkillingJkuatStudents.
