GOOGLE CUTS TIES WITH HUAWEI

Google cuts ties with Huawei

Google has suspended key business activities with Huawei, which include key technical services, in a move analysts say will be a major blow to the Chinese smartphone company.

Other major functions the U.S. tech giant has suspended with Huawei include the transfer of hardware and software. This means that Huawei can no longer license Google’s proprietary Android operating system and other services that it offers including access to apps such as the Gmail.

Google made the move in order to comply with a decision by Washington to put Huawei on the “Entity List,” which requires American firms need to get a license to sell products to the Chinese firm.

The directive bars US companies from telecommunications trade with foreign companies said to threaten American national security.

Google’s Android mobile operating system powers most of the world’s smartphones, following Google’s move to cut ties with Huawei, the Chinese firm will now only able to use a public version of Google’s operating system through the Android Open Source Project. It means future Huawei phones will not have the Google services that users have come to expect on Android devices.

Google has in a Tweet made via it’s Android account assured Huawei users that services like Google Play and security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on existing devices.

“For Huawei users’ questions regarding our steps to comply w/ the recent US government actions: We assure you while we are complying with all US gov’t requirements, services like Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on your existing Huawei device.”
