KEBS Lifts Ban on Kifaru, Dola Maize Flour Brands Over Aflatoxin

KEBS Maize Flour ban over Aflatoxins

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has lifted the ban for two of the five maize flour brands, which the agency had recently suspended over excessive levels of aflatoxin.

According to KEBS, the Dola by Kitui Four Mills and Kifaru by Alpha Grain Limited had met approved quality standards. The agency further commended Alpha Grain Millers for “stopping production of the affected product in the period it was required to and conducting and monitoring to completion the recall exercise of the product in the market.”

The other maize flour brands that were suspended alongside Dola and Kifaru over the sale of substandard flour, reportedly contaminated with high levels of cancer-causing aflatoxins are Starehe made by Pan African Grain in Nairobi; 210 Two Ten Maize Meal by the Thika-based Kenblest Limited and Jembe maize meal manufactured by Kensalrise Limited in Eldoret.

Kebs while announcing the ban had ordered the manufacturers to institute corrective actions to reduce aflatoxin levels in the grain they are using.

“The affected manufacturers will be required to institute corrective actions whose effectiveness shall be confirmed by Kebs before the suspension of permits is lifted,” said Kebs.
