President Uhuru Kenyatta surrounded by his security detail after fracas erupted in a meeting at Migori

CORD leaders have come out strongly to condemn the fracas that was witnessed yesterday in a meeting led by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Migori County.

The ODM Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o, through a statement, condemned the chaos that erupted during the President’s tour in Migori and asked ODM supporters to accord the President the respect he deserves.

“On behalf of the ODM and the people of Kenya as a whole, I would like to condemn this type of behaviour and to plead to our people to always give the President the respect he deserves,’ read the statement in part.

The youths started chanting ODM slogans and hurled shoes and other paraphernalia at the presidential dais soon after Migori Governor Okoth Obado, whom they did not want to address them, moved to the microphone to address the gathering, causing security tension at the meeting.

The presidential guard threw a security cordon around the tent where the President and other dignitaries sat and shortly after, President Kenyatta managed to calm down the youths amidst a few ODM chants that ran through the air.

Uhuru who was in Migori to launch a Sh7 billion mosquito net distribution urged the crowd to be calm as no one would benefit from the fracas and promised to serve all Kenyans equally.

Nairobi governor Evans Kidero, has also come out to criticize the misconduct by the youths terming it as “archaic, barbaric and uncivilised”.

“Every leader worth his salt must condemn with the strongest terms the heckling and lack of respect for the President. The President is a symbol of national unity and an expression of people’s sovereignty and needs to be respected,” said Kidero.
