Kenyan athletes made a sterling performance yesterday at the 2016 Chicago marathon following a clean sweep of the first five positions in the race.
Two-time World Marathon champion Abel Kirui, stayed ahead of the pack to win this year’s Chicago Marathon in a record time of 2:11:23, overthrowing the defending champion Dickson Chumba who finished second in a time of 2:11:26.
Gideon Kipketer came in third (2:12:20) followed by Paul Lonyangata (2:13:17) with Stephen Sambu finishing fifth in a time of 2:13:35.
Florence Kiplagat Defends Her Title
In the women’s marathon, Florence Kiplagat took the lead at 40km to defend her title and won the race in a record time (2:21:32) and just like in the men’s marathon, three other fellow patriots clinched the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions.
Edna Kiplagat came in second at a time of 02:23:28 followed by Valentine Kipketer (02:23:41) and Purity Rionoripo (02:24:47).
