Uproar as ‘selective’ process applied in cholera hotel shutdowns

There has been a public uproar following the ministry of health’s decision to shut down two city hotels; San Valencia and the Jacaranda hotel over the cholera outbreak.

The public has been incensed by the fact that Weston hotel, where at least 50 guests suffered cholera three weeks ago has been left out. The victims included doctors who were part of delegates attending the “The Kenya International Scientific Lung Health Conference” organized by the Ministry Of Health.

The Weston hotel is associated with deputy president William Ruto and for it to be excluded in the temporary closure by the ministry is being seen as sheer impunity.

According to Health CS Cleopha Mailu, 79 people are admitted to different Nairobi hospitals with cholera.

The Nairobi county government has issued an alert of a cholera outbreak in May after five cases were confirmed and victims hospitalized. The four cases reported occurred at a wedding in Karen.

Kenyans took to social media to condemn the government for the selective action in closing down the hotels under the trending hashtags #JacarandaAndSanValencia; #WestonHotel; #CholeraNairobi

Below are some of the views shared on Twitter

Kenipedia: Health Cs Mailu a protectionist. Weston Hotel untouched but Jacaranda and San Valencia axed. We’ll tackle favoritism they say! #CholeraNairobi

Marilyn Mel‏l:   Health CS Mailu closes Jacaranda and San Valencia hotels after cholera outbreak. The Langata hotel is too hot to close.

Stephen Wanyingo‏: Whose interest is Health CS Mailu protecting by closing Jacaranda and San Valencia hotels and not Weston Hotel?

Felix Oyoo Omondi‏: Selective Administration is when you close jacaranda and San Valencia and leave Weston running yet all have admitted people to the hospital

Charles Mark Dienya‏: WESTON was the First Hotel where Cholera outbreak was Reported, Why Close Jacaranda and San Valencia and open WESTON?

Wambui‏: Maybe Health CS Mailu is only closing those hotels that have no license to spread cholera. Weston Hotel must be having one.
