MATIANG’I ORDERS FRESH PROBE IN NG’ANG’A ACCIDENT CASE

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has ordered for a fresh probe in the case involving Pastor James Ng’ang’a after a magistrate court acquitted him in a case where he had been accused of causing the death of a woman through reckless driving.

Matiang’i said the Interior ministry noted with surprise that the pastor was acquitted “yet a brazen crime was committed by the accused person”.

He asked the Directorate of criminal investigations (DCI) to pursue justice for the victims and asked for a comprehensive report on the trial and investigation process regarding the case.

A magistrate judge at the Limuru Law Courts on Monday acquitted the neon evangelism preacher in the case  where he was accused of being behind an accident that left Mercy Njeri and at least two others injured along Nairobi-Nakuru highway on July 26, 2015, when his range rover collided head-on with a vehicle the victims had been travelling in.

Chief magistrate Godfrey Oduor, ruled in favour of Ng’ang’a saying there was no sufficient evidence. Oduor’s ruling has been termed as inept and has  evoked a public backlash.

Matiang’I has asked the DCI to appeal the ruling and take action against anyone found guilty for improper handling of the case.

“While seeking a report on the investigatory and trial processes that may have caused this outcome, I urge you to appeal this judgment in its entirety and pursue justice for the victims herein and the people of Kenya,” he said.

According to witness accounts, some who testified in court, the Range Rover was being driven recklessly on the wrong side of the road, with a chase car behind when it collude with another car. Ng’ang’a allegedly jumped out of the vehicle soon after the accident and got into the chase car before it sped off.
