SELESIO KARANJA BECOMES FIRST NYS SCANDAL CONVICT

Selessio Karanja sentenced in NYS graft

Selessio Karanja, who worked as a supply chain assistant at the National Youth Service (NYS) has become the first person to be convicted for the graft in NYS.

Selessio, who is also a former church elder, had been implicated in the NYS scandal season 1 that had entangled former devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru.

Milimani Anti-Corruption Court chief magistrate Lawrence Mugambi on Thursday found Selessio Karanja guilty of fraudulent procurement practice involving a Sh47.6 million tender.

He was accused of fraudulently entering the name of Dama Services Ltd in the tender opening register to procure engineering automotive training materials, whereas the company had not been approved for the tender.

He has been fined Sh4 million, failure to which he will be sentenced to four years in jail. The magistrate further barred Karanja from holding any public office.

The former NYS official had been charged alongside former devolution PS Peter Mangiti, Former NYS deputy Director General, Adan Harakhe, and former tender committee chairman in the Ministry of Devolution Hassan Noor and 22 others, who have since been acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Sh1.6 billion was lost in the 2016 NYS theft through fraudulent transactions.
