SAMBURU GOVERNOR MOSES LENOLKULAL SLAPPED WITH SH 100M CASH BAIL

Samburu governor Moses Lenolkunal arrested

A high court judge has slapped Samburu Governor, Moses Kasaine Lenolkulal, who is facing Sh84.7m corruption and abuse of office charges, with a Sh 100M cash bail or a bond of Sh 150M.

Lenolkulal was arrested on Tuesday morning by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts, Nairobi.

The governor is among 13 other officials, including his deputy Julius Leseeto, businessman Hesbon Ndathi, county secretary, chief finance officer, former chief officer in charge of environment and several other chief officers, who have been linked to a Sh84.7m fuel supply scandal.

The governor was also charged with unlawful acquisition of public property and conflict of interest over the payment of 84.7 million shillings to himself, through the Oryx Service Station.

Judge also ordered the governor to hand over his passport.

According to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who recommended the prosecution of the governor, Samburu county government gave Oryx Service Station a tender to supply fuel to the county against the law.

Oryx Service Station, which has been doing business with the country since 2013, is allegedly owned by the governor and Mr Ndathi.

“The governor failed and or neglected to disclose his interest in the said Service Station. It is clear that the governor engaged in conduct that is expressly prohibited in law and in clear violation of the constitutional principles governing the conduct of public and
state officers,” Mr Haji said in a statement.

The Sh 100M cash bail is the highest that the courts have ever issued to a graft suspect.

The EACC has said it has also recovered assets associated with the graft.

“We have preserved assets touching on this county to the tune of sh 330M,” EAAC said.

The court has also ordered the governor or any of the officials linked to the graft from accessing the county offices or county funds until the case is resolved.
