IG ISSUES NEW DIRECTIVE ON TRAFFIC CLEARANCE FOR VIPS

VIP protection scaled down

Any driver of a government vehicle (GK) found violating traffic regulations especially those overlapping, will be arrested and charged in accordance to the law, following a new directive issued by Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai.

According to the new traffic directives on road clearance for VIPs, only the president, deputy president, the first lady,  the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, Speaker of the National Assembly and the Senate, Cabinet Secretaries for defence, interior , finance and foreign affairs, will be accorded road clearance.

The Principal Secretaries for Defence, Interior and co-ordination of national government, Finance and  Foreign Affairs, together with fire brigades and ambulances  will also be entitled to road clearance.

According to the IG, the decision was reached following a public outcry of motorists being bullied off the roads by VIP escorts.

The directive, which takes place with immediate effect,  further states that vehicles carrying VIPs not listed above will have to seek authority from officers in charge of traffic in respective regions on special need basis.
