Kenya’s Victoria Rubadiri Wins 2020 BBC World News Komla Dumor Award

Citizen TV news anchor, Victoria Rubadiri, has won the 2020 BBC world news  Komla Dumor Award, becoming the second Kenyan to win the award after Waihiga Mwaura who won the award last year.

Rubadiri revealed that she has known the news for a couple of months so the tough part was trying to keep it a secret until the official announcement was made by BBC.

“BBC is such a respected news outlet globally, so to get such validation is amazing”.

As a recipient of the Komla Dumor Award, Rubadiri will get an opportunity for a three-month placement at the BBC where she will attend a training course with the BBC Academy before joining BBC News teams – across TV, radio and online.

The award was created to honour Komla Dumor, a presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014.

“Komla was amazing, I really admired how versatile he was. in one moment you see him walking alongside ahead of state and the next he would be talking to a group of miners, so that kind of versatility was really admirable. He was authoritative and personable at the same time and he was able to connect and engage with his audience. Komla for me, was and still is the epitome of excellence, African excellence and I think him showing that standard and it is good enough to be put on the global stage, really is an encouragement to young African journalists like myself, wanting to grow to that level,” Rubadiri told BBC.

Wahigah Mwaura congratulated Rubadiri for the feat, saying he couldn’t think of a more deserving journalist.

Other former winners of the BBC world news  Komla Dumor Award include; Solomon Serwanjja, Amina Yuguda, Didi Akinyelure and Nancy Kacungira.
