KUPPET and KNUT Threaten to Withdraw Teachers from Kapedo over Insecurity

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have expressed concerns on the welfare of teachers in Kapedo, Baringo, Pokot, and its environs and have given the government an ultimatum of seven days to restore the dwindling security in the region failure to which they will withdraw teachers from the volatile environment.

Officials of the two unions have also at the same time, the unions have asked teachers who feel unsafe in the region to pack their belongings and report to the County Director’s office.

We will be forced to ask Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to withdraw all teachers from these high-risk areas,” Kuppet Chairman chairman Omboko Milemba said.

Tension remains high in Kapedo following days of bandit attacks. More than 10 people including police officers have been killed and the police have launched a major operation to flush out bandits behind the killings.

Two more police officers were on Thursday evening shot and killed in an ambush by gunmen in Kapedo area, Baringo County, at the same place a senior General Service Unit officer was also ambushed and killed.

According to the County Director of Trade, TurkanaCounty James Lokwale,  “The biggest cause of insecurity in Kapedo area of Turkana East is the armed Pokot settlements at Kaamuge, Lomelo, Kasarani and Silale hills”.
He urged the government to collect all firearms in the hands of civilians, saying that is what has brought peace and tranquility in Turkana South. 
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on Monday said Kapedo will be declared a disturbed area and a dusk to dawn curfew will be launched in region to enhance the ongoing operation.
