Former Governor Mike Sonko Charged with Terrorism

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was on Wednesday charged with terrorism charges at Kahawa West Law Courts.

The court, which had closed for the day, reopened to hear a request by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations who were seeking to hold him for 30 days.

The embattled former Nairobi Governor is accused of recruiting a militia group that disrupted peace and stability in the country. He was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Diana Mochache.

Kamiti Maximum Prison

Sonko’s lawyer, Dr John Khaminwa, had on Wednesday claimed that the ex-county boss was transferred to Kamiti Maximum Prison from Gigiri police station where he was to be detained until Thursday when the court will determine whether he can be released on bail or not.

Robbery

The former governor was arrested on Monday and on Tuesday he was arraigned at the Kiambu Law courts where he was charged with assault, robbery with violence and destruction of property linked to an alleged forced entry into a property in Buru Buru estate back in 2019.

He denied all 12 charges levelled against him.

The flamboyant Nairobi governor was impeached after the members of the Senate voted overwhelmingly to kick him out of the office following a successful impeachment motion passed by 88 members of the county assembly on December 3.
