Raila Odinga Tests Positive for COVID-19

Former Prime Minister and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has tested positive for Covid-19 and is admitted at the Nairobi Hospital.

Raila, in a statement issued on Thursday, urged Kenyans to observe all the stipulated measures, saying that Covid-19 is real.

“This evening, I received a briefing from the doctors who have conducted numerous and complicated tests on me for the last two days… While the tests were several, one important result, which I have authorized the doctors to make public is that I have been found to have been exposed to Covid-19,” Odinga said.

Odinga (76), further assured the nation that he was well feeling well and strong but was following his Doctor’s recommendation to quarantine for 14 days.

“He is responding well to the treatment he is receiving at the Nairobi Hospital and remains upbeat,” his personal Dr David Olunya said.

Critics have however accused “Baba”, as he is popularly referred to, for flouting health guidelines and risking his life and those of the people around him, including the public by engaging in political rallies, considering his age, which puts him at high risk of COVID-19 exposure.

“Raila Odinga is 76 years old. A man of that age should be able to make wise decisions. Raila made a choice to fly to the coast, that decision endangered him and the thousands who attended his rally. May he get better and leave the hospital with more common sense than he went in with,” Activist Boniface Mwangi said in a tweet.
Kenya had registered 829 new cases of Covid-19 cases as the country stares at a third wave of Covid-19 pandemic.
