The decision by Radio Africa to fire three of its presenters, for derogatory comments they made on March 25 on its morning show against a victim of Gender-Based Violence, is major precedence in the fight against the widespread misogyny that continues to dim the fight against GBV in the country.

Radio Africa had first suspended the trio for two weeks but moved to terminate their services over what they termed as “Gross Misconduct” following a massive public outcry that saw brands like East African Breweries Limited (EABL)  suspend advertising with the station.

During their morning show on March 25, Shaffie Weru, Joseph Munoru (DJ Mfalme) and Neville Muysa made comments that appeared to victim shame and justify sexual assault against women.

The comments were made in relation to a sad case involving a woman who has left nursing physical injuries after a date went awry and the man she had met on Facebook threw her out of a 12th-floor window, allegedly for refusing his sexual advances.

Communications Authority Fines Homeboyz Radio Sh1 million

The Communications Authority of Kenya fined Radio Africa’s Homeboyz Radio Sh1 million for the derogatory comments about women its presenters made on March 25 on its morning show Lift-Off.

The CA has also imposed a six-month suspension of the station’s morning breakfast show until the station complies with regulatory requirements.

The sacking of Radio Africa presenters over derogatory slurs against women and the action taken by relevant authorities like the CA and the Media Council is a bold move that will go along way in curbing the widespread misogyny in Kenya.
