Alarm Over Moi University Students Going Without Meals

A memo by John Ayieko, the Dean of students at Moi University has left Kenyans On Twitter (KOT) in shock after it revealed that some students are facing starvation in school.

“It has come to our notice that there are several students who are starving and have been going without meals for some days. This is to request all students to send details of anyone who is starving to the Dean of Students through class reps and Student leaders, ” the memo dated Monday, March 8 reads in part.

Some of the students from Moi University who have joined the conversation on Twitter have acknowledged that indeed they are suffering not just on meals but on accommodation as well due to delayed disbursement of Helb loans. One pointed out that the starvation was so real that students are fainting in the lecture halls.

@NjapitMwaana : If you think we are shouting for fame and trends please fika Moi University ujionee! Some things are beyond jokes If you can help without poking fingers please help Comrades are fainting on corridors!
Student Demonstration
The students have called for a peaceful demonstration tomorrow to protest the delay in the Helb loans saying other universities across the country including Nairobi University have gotten their Helb disburements.

“The aim of this demonstration is to sensitize the government on the delayed disbursement to specifically Moi Univesity students. This comes after students in other universities, specifically, Nairobi were awarded their loans following demonstrations in Nairobi,” a letter from the Moi Students Association reads in part.

HELB provides affordable loans bursaries and scholarships to Kenyans pursuing higher education.

Below are some of the reactions shared under the tranding hashtag #MoiUniversity

@kevinFult : Hey guys I’m the guy with the funny shoes & I’m in my 2nd year at Moi University – Main Campus; I am brought up by a single Mum. The struggle is real and with the current situation, I only depend on few friends and well-wishers. At times I go without food…

@WaruiJohn2: I also want to thank those Moi university comrades who are really trying to help the less fortunate Comrades within the school!….. Though ni kubaya, they are really trying
@Femaleking22__: This is a rare picture of a comrade in moi university sleeping helplessly because of hunger. I can testify that the situation here is very bad. If you know anyone here kindly help them out.

@EcEssie: I understand the situation at Moi University. Being a student, your family is not rich and you don’t have a weekend job is hard. The circumstances can make students drop out.
