Tim Howard breaks World Cup record
BELGIUM 2-1 USA
The Belgians advanced to the quarter-finals after beating the Americans by two goals to one in a game that was forced into extra time.
The game would have probably ended in favour of Belgium if it were not for the record breaking heroic saves of Tim Howard on the goal post.
TIM BREAKS WORLD CUP RECORD
Tim Howard, broke a World Cup record by making 16 saves in a match. The American goalkeeper kept pulling a save after another to keep the USA team in the competition, granting the opponents 30 more minutes to try and break him.
Finally in the extra time, the Belgians went ahead by a goal from Kevin De Bruyne and R. Lukaku added a second after coming in as a substitute. Juliana Green got a goal late on for the Americans but it was a little too late to force the two teams into a penalty shootout.
For the first time, the Belgium Coach started with the 19yr old Divock Origi who has always been introduced as a substitute halfway through the match and it almost paid off when the striker almost scored in the early minutes of the game.
ARGENTINA 1-0 SWITZERLAND
The three times world champions broke the hearts of the Swiss after Angel Di Maria scored the only goal late on into extra time to send Argentina into the quarter finals of the competition.
Despite Argentina dominating the entire game, the team was unable to break through the Swiss defense for 90 minutes. As the team went into the extra minutes, the Switzerland script looked the same as the first 90 minutes, where they chose to defend and offer little threat to the opposition.
It had to take the magic of Lionel Messi who took on three defenders to give Di Maria a pass and the Real Madrid winger converted it into the only goal of the match at the 118 minute.
It was quite a heart breaking defeat for the veteran coach Ottmar Hitzfeld who is planning to end his managerial career.
