10-man Costa Rica held on to a famous win through penalty shootouts making it to the quarter finals for the first time in the nation’s history.
Costa Rica had taken an early lead in the second half courtesy of their captain Bryan Ruiz. In the 66th minute the defender Oscar Duarte was sent off for a mistimed tackle. The red card marked the 10th so far issued in this season’s World Cup.
The Greeks took full advantage as they were rewarded late on in stoppage time with a goal from Sokratis Papastiathopoulos that forced the game to go into extra time.
They were no goals in the added 30 minutes and the two teams were forced into a penalty shootout.
Greece were knocked out 5-3 after Costa Rica converted all their spot kicks.
