Rieko Mwenyewe gives his personal take on the performance of African teams in the 2022 World Cup.

The FIFA, Federation of International Football Association, was first started on 21st May 1904 by National Association of Belgium, Denmark, France Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and Sweden. The first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930 when Uruguay was crowned as Champions.

In the current FIFA World Cup, won by Argentina, African Countries did very well, the best in any Word Cup to date.

Morocco

Morocco performed beyond expectations having beaten Belgium and Canada in Group Stage. Morocco also beat Spain in the Round of 16 and Portugal in Quarter Final only to finally lose in the Semi-Finals to France.

The Morocco national team broke the record of being the first African Team to reach the semi-finals in the FIFA World Cup History. Morocco had qualified for FIFA World Cup on six occasions in 1970,1986,1994,1998,2018 and 2022.

Senegal

Senegal beat Qatar and Ecuador in the group stages. They went out in the Round of 16 after losing to England 3-0.

Senegal have appeared in FIFA World Cup three times in, 2003, 2018 and 2022. They were the first team to be eliminated from the round of 16 via the Fair Play Rule having been tied with Japan on points.

Tunisia

The Tunisia national team made history when the beat France, the reigning FIFA World Cup Champion. Although they were eliminated at group stages they made Africa proud by beating the World Champions and preferred team of the moment to win FIFA World Cup 2022.

Tunisia has appeared in FIFA World Cup six times, in 1978,1998, 2002, 2006, 2018 and 2022.

Cameroon

Cameroon made history when they beat the current number one team in the World Brazil at the group stage although they were ultimately eliminated by goal difference and denied proceeding to the group of 16 stage. Cameroon also made history when they were the first African Team to proceed to the round of sixteen way back in 1986 when they almost beat England, the latter helped by two uncalled for penalties when Cameron leading 2-1 against England. The match ended at 3-2. Cameroon is also the only team that has scored a goal against Brazil at a FIFA World Cup.

Cameroon National Team has appeared in the FIFA World Cup nine times,1982,1986, 1990,1994, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2014, and 2022.

Ghana

Ghana did well in beating South Korea although they were eliminated in Group Stage by Portugal. Ghana has appeared in FIFA World Cups four times in 2006, 2020, 2014 and 2022.

General Overview

The FIFA world Cup 2022 produced the best in African Teams when all the five participating teams won at least one match against other notable teams. The most outstanding team, Morocco, won three games including scalping Portugal at the Quarter Final Stage.

We give praise to all African Teams hoping that they will do even better next time.
