IRAN 0-0 NIGERIA
For the first time in this year’s World Cup we have two teams sharing the spoils; a much disciplined defense from Iran’s ‘back four’ plus the keeper kept the ‘hungry Eagles’ away.
A GAME OF GOALKEEPERS
Rarely is a goalkeeper given credit in a football match but in this game the two ‘stoppers’ were the men of the match.
Enyeama, the Nigerian goalkeeper showed why he is the best keeper in Africa and being the Super Eagles captain, he demonstrated leadership throughout the match.
Haghighi, the Iran goalkeeper on the other end made great saves to keep his team in the World Cup Tournament. He has sustained his fine forms of clean sheets for his country from the qualification matches of the World Cup Brazil.
USA BEATS GHANA IN A REVENGE MISSION AS COACH GETS CRITICISM
GHANA 1-2 USA
The Black Stars broke the hearts of many African fans after being beaten by the Americans 2-1, despite a spirited performance. The fastest goal of the tournament came from the US skipper, Dempsey at the 31st second!
Then Ayew ran on to a beautiful back-heel from Gyan running away from goal, and poked a perfect shot past Howard with the outside of his boot giving Ghana an equalizer in the 82nd minute. Four minutes later, however, the USA finished off the Ghana from a corner.
Ghana knocked the USA out of the two previous World Cups, beating them by a score of 2-1 in both and in this match USA was definitely on a vengeance mission.
GHANA’S COACH CRITICIZED
Many fans were shocked to see James Kwesi Apiah, Ghana’s coach, leave out Prince Boateng and Micheal Essien on the bench. The game changed when the two were introduced in the second half but the ‘ugly truth’ is that the two goals the Black Stars conceded were due to poor defending.
The remaining two games for Ghana are against Germany and Portugal, the second and fourth best teams in the world respectively and the black Stars have a lot to do if they are to proceed in the next stage.
RAMPANT GERMANS SEE OFF SORRY PORTUGAL
Germany 4-0 Portugal
Germany looked absolutely prepared for Portugal, whilst the latter were awful in the first half and totally exhausted in the second half. Thomas Muller scored the first hat-trick of the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014, as his team hammered a despairing Portugal, four goals without reply.
Wounded and disappointed, Pepe lost his cool and head-butted Muller while the German striker was sitted on the floor an action that earned him a straight red card. With Pepe red-carded and Hugo Almeida limping off, Portugal was having a ‘bad day in office’ but the players tried to come out in attack but the Germans took full advantage of the opposition being ‘short one man’. The three goals Muller scored marked the 49th hat-trick in the history of the World Cup finals.
As a fan who was watching the match with this Kenya Forum correspondent joked “Hitler’s Dream of Ruling European countries is somehow manifesting through football; The Germans started with England in 2010 hummering them 4-1, now Portugal have got their 4-0. It’s kind of a Series,” the fan said adding that, “the men were watching the Germans play and the Women stayed awake for Ronaldo”.
