Sports Rich list 2013: how much do top sports players earn?

The ‘Sport Rich List 2013’ has been published and you might find this simple calculator a help as the Kenya Forum takes you through some of the highlights: £1m (that’s 1 million British Pounds) = Sh129m, and $1m (1 million US Dollars) = Sh84m.

RICHEST FOOTBALLERS

David Beckham’s best days in football are far behind him but he is still earning a living kicking a ball for the French side Paris Saint-Germain to help top up his estimated worth of £165m!

Wayne Rooney tops the list of the wealthiest English Premier League (EPL) players with a net worth valued at £51m. Meanwhile, he earns £15.3m per year at EPL champions Manchester United.

YAYA TOURE UP BUT ADEBAYOR TAKES A PAY CUT

Across the city of Manchester, Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure isn’t doing too badly having accumulated an estimated £17m (up £4m on last year) and earning £14.1 a year at Manchester City.

Emmanuel Adebayor has had a tough year, the poor man. When he moved from Manchester City to Tottenham last year his wages were cut from £170,000 to £100,000 per week (how does he manage?) but he did get a £4m signing-on fee to soften the blow and this plus advertising contracts with Adidas and Power Horse energy drinks means he still gets by, total wealth valued at £14m.

Meanwhile former Chelsea star Didier Drogba is passing his twilight years in football earning just £10.7m a year with the Turkish side Galatasaray.

BILLIONAIRE OWNERS

You think footballers earn a shilling or two?! The joint owners of Arsenal, Alisher Usamov (described as a Russian ‘business magnate’) and Frahad Moshiri (Iranian-British – owns companies in the UK and Russia) are said to be worth £13,300m and £1,800m respectively. Cheslea’s owner, Roman Abramovich also not doing badly, valued at £9,300m. That’s right, that’s billions, not millions!

So no wonder Arsenal can afford to pay Arsene Wenger £7.5m a year bringing his total wealth up to an estimated £29m. That’s a better annual salary than Sir Alex Ferguson gets at Manchester United but Ferguson is worth more at £34m.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

You don’t have to be an EPL footballer to be rich (although it helps).

Lewis Hamilton the former Forumla1 Champion (2008) now driving with Mercedes is estimated by the Sport Rich List 2013 to be worth £60m.

The tennis prodigies of the William’s family will not be starving this year either. Serena Williams is estimated to have earned $43,304,272 just from her winning fees on court and her sister Venus Williams $28,668,243.

BIG BUCKS IN BASKETBALL

But if you want to earn real money, forget football and to hell with tennis, start practicing your basketball.

Sudanese born Luol Deng is in his final year with the Chicago Bulls where he picks up £9m a year.

Kobe Bryant, also known as the “Black Mamba” of Los Angeles Lakers fame has accumulated some £218m through a career in basketball.

That’s nothing, however, compared to Michael Jordan, who even though he retired ten years ago still earns £50m a year from sponsorship to help top up his estimated wealth of £419m!
