Kenyan men are losing more weight, unlike their female counterparts who are putting on the pounds to the point of obesity, the Ministry of Heath (MOH) has revealed.
According to the survey, single men in particular are getting thinner, something the survey attributes to poor eating habits.
Gladys Mugambi, the head of Nutrition & Diabetics at the MOH , “people living alone practice poor eating habits like skipping meals and eating the same kind of foods that have low nutritional values,” .
True to the MOH ‘s assertion’s, single men in Kenya, especially those in 8am-5pm jobs, are known to survive routinely on one main meal, bread and eggs, casually termed as the “bachelors starter pack” .
WOMEN IN NAIROBI, MOMBASA, MORE OBESE
Meanwhile more women on the other hand are getting obese, which the survey attributes predominantly to lifestyle issues.
According to the MOH 38.4 per cent of the women were either overweight or obese compared to 17.5 per cent of men. Two-thirds of all obese women live in 10 counties, the top three being Nairobi, Kiambu and Mombasa.
Mugambi said that urgent measures should be taken to curb the rising cases of obesity in women in Kenya, which currently rates among the top 10 countries for the number of obese women in Africa.
She advocates for women to embrace healthy eating such as traditional foods like vegetables, fruits, grains, arrow roots since lifestyle issues and unhealthy eating habits are mostly to blame for the rise in obesity. Mugambi however notes that hormonal issues have played a part as well.TAGS
