Parents at Nyarenda Primary in Bomachoge Chache, Kisii county, are calling for the removal and prosecution of a teacher accused of defiling and impregnating some of the girls in the school.
According to the parents, who launched a protest on Sunday, some of the pregnant girls, majority of whom are in class 8, have revealed that the accused teacher is the one that defiled them.
The parents however pointed out that while they cannot directly link him to all the total six pregnancy cases in the school, he must be held accountable for the cases he has been accused of.
The teacher has been reportedly preying on them during weekends tuition hours.
One of the victims, who is six months pregnant said the teacher lured her to the office and defiled her repeatedly.
county education director Pius Ng’oma said he had not received a formal complaint on the matter but maintained that he will follow up on the issue.
“The law is very clear that no teacher who sexually molests learners should be allowed in class and this one should be no exception,” he said.
Cases of teen pregnancies have been on the rise post-Covid and as the country gears for the national school exams, we can expect to see the usual number of candidates who do their exams in maternity wards.
