Bomb experts on Sunday detonated an unexploded mortar bomb in Shabaa, Samburu County, after herders bumped on it on Saturday morning.
According to Samburu Central Police Commander Abdikadir Malicha, the residents reported the discovery of what they termed as “a suspicious object”, which the police confirmed to be a mortar bomb.
Malicha further added that the mortar bomb could have been left behind after paramilitary training in the region a few years ago.
“We responded swiftly. The area was secured by the team that arrived early today. The explosive was detonated successfully,” He said.
According to residents, such occurrences are quite common in the region. They have called on the Kenya Defense forces to conduct a sweep and clear out any such devices that continue to pose a danger to the locals.
