Veteran politician and Laikipia Senator G.G Kariuki died on Thursday night at the Nairobi hospital where he was receiving treatment.
Kariuki (78) was a minister in the Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi regimes and is the only MP in Kenya today who served in the first Parliament. He was first elected to Parliament in May 1963 and served uninterruptedly for 20 years before losing in the 1983 snap elections.
The late Kariuki, fondly referred to as GG, was elected as Laikipia senator in the 2013 elections and was seeking a re-election on a Jubilee Party ticket in the upcoming elections.
In 2016, he graduated with a PHD in internal relations at the University of Nairobi.
