Governor Mike Sonko Set To Name Deputy

Nairobi governor Mike Sonko is expected to announce his nominee for Deputy Governor on Friday afternoon.

The governor had last year listed four women namely; Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, gender activist and insurance executive Agnes Kagure as well as lawyers Karen Nyamu and Jane Weru in his list of nominees.

The candidate that will be picked will be vetted and approved the County Assembly.

The County Assembly will be guided by the following considerations when vetting a nominee;

  • the procedure used to arrive at the nominee including the criteria for the shortlisting of the nominees;
  • any constitutional or statutory requirements relating to the office in question; and
  • the suitability of the nominee for the appointment proposed having regard to whether the nominee’s credentials, abilities, experience and qualities meet the needs of the body to which the nomination is being made,” section 8 of the County Government Act states.

Sonko has been running without a governor following the resignation of his running mate Polycarp Igathe, who resigned in January 2018 citing a strained working relationship with the governor. Igathe was recently appointed as the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Equity Bank.

Sonko had nominated in May 2018 Miguna to replace Polycarp Igathe but the county assembly nullified the nomination.
