32 Dead in Kitui Bus Tragedy

There’s been an increasing public uproar after over 30 people died on Saturday when the bus they were traveling in was swept away by fast-flowing floodwaters as it crossed over a river in Kitui county.

Although it’s not clear how many people were aboard the ill-fated bus there were 17 survivors who were rescued when the accident occurred, while 32 bodies recovered by Sunday evening after the bus wreckage was pulled out of Enziu river.

The victims were church and members of the same family who were travelling for a wedding.

The ill-fated bus wreckage is completely out of the river. 9 more bodies have been recovered today bringing the total bodies recovered to 32. Recovery efforts continue tomorrow to ensure nobodies are left behind trapped at the river bed,” Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu announced on Sunday.

Residents of Kitui County and Kenyans at large have taken to social media to convey their disappointment on their leaders, saying such tragic incidences have become a common occurrence each year during the rainy season due to lack of proper infrastructure.

You would expect such a big and busy road to have a bridge instead of drifts. Such roads are so common in Ukambani and it’s high time our leaders did something before we lose more lives,” One Mutua shared on Facebook.

Vicky Zola: Mp for 35 years, minister for 25 years and Vice president 5 years and yet your people die due to lack of good infrastructure after holding those powerful positions. keep tweeting knowing you and your governor @mamangilu have let your Ukambani people down #enziu

@Yours_Rossy: Sadly some Kenyans still re-elect the same individuals even after all the tragedies on #RiverEnziu bridge . May the departed souls rest in peace. Shame on the local government, shame on the county government, you lost trust in your people! #RiverEnziu

@JamesOchieng254: Failing to construct a bridge across a major river #RiverEnziu is a way of staging murder. Charity Ngilu should be remanded. Taxpayers are dying when their taxes are resting in county accounts.
