Police officer jailed for 15 years for defiling minor

The High Court in Migori County has sentenced a police officer based at Rapogi Police post, in Uriri constituency, to 15 years imprisonment for defiling a 16-year-old teenager.

Migori High Court Resident Magistrate Angela Munyuny found 38-year-old Howard Omwaha, guilty of defiling the minor and committing an indecent act with a child.

The court heard that the police officer committed the offence while working at the gender desk at the station.

He is accused of committing the offence between March and April 2021, in his house, when the teenager was helping his wife babysit.

He reportedly threatened the teenager not to report the matter and paid her Sh1,000 to buy her silence.

The minor later got pregnant and delivered a child and the court was told the officer paid Sh3,000 to support the child and tried to buy silence from the family.

While pleading for leniency, the accused said he has three children and two wives.

He has 14 days to appeal the sentence.
