Twin blasts at Gikomba
Two explosions have hit Gikomba market in Nairobi killing 10 people and injuring at least 10 others, according to the Kenyan Red Cross.
The Kenyan National Disaster Operation Centre said the first blast occurred in a minibus, the second in the large open-air Gikomba market.
Five Red Cross ambulances are at the scene to help the victims of the blasts.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has issued a statement in reaction to the blasts which says: “Many countries are faced with this particular problem (terrorism). All of us must be united to ensure that we fight it.”
“We will do what we can as a government. We in Kenya, are committed to this fight and we urge Kenyans to work with us.”
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack but suspicion is bound to fall on the al-Qaida-affiliated Islamist group al-Shabaab who are waging an insurgency against Kenya government because of the presence of Kenyan troops in Somalia.
